How to add a privacy policy page to a Squarespace site
By Paul Cranmer, Founder · Last verified October 2026 · Squarespace · Pages, footer, Cookies & Data Privacy
Squarespace will not write your privacy policy and says it cannot advise on its content. Its help does say where to put it: a dedicated page, linked from the footer so it is reachable from almost any page, from the cookie banner, and on the checkout page if you run a store. This page follows those instructions.
Who this is for
- Squarespace site owners who need a privacy policy URL for lead ads, a store or an app listing
- Sites turning on the cookie banner, which needs a policy page to link
- Stores that want the policy on the checkout page
Not for
- Squarespace Extensions listed in the Extensions marketplace
- Sites built outside Squarespace
What the platform requires
- Squarespace Help: as the website owner, certain laws may require you to inform visitors about cookies and, for some cookies, get their permission; cookie notice requirements vary depending on your location and cookie use, and Squarespace cannot provide advice about the content of a privacy or cookie policy page.
- To link a policy from the banner: create a page, name it Privacy Policy or Cookie Policy (or similar) and add your policy text; open the Cookies & Data Privacy panel, switch on the Cookie banner toggle, add a link to the new page in the banner text field, and save.
- Share your policies and terms on your site: in your footer, add text or links to Not Linked pages that contain your policies, so they are reachable from almost any page; stores can add return policies, terms of service and privacy policies to the checkout page, where they open in a pop-up.
- If you have visitors from the EU or UK, Squarespace says having a dedicated cookie policy on your site is often a legal requirement, and that visitors' GDPR rights should be explained in it.
Get a live URL first
If you want the policy hosted outside Squarespace, create a hosted privacy policy URL here (websites are on the hosted plan) and link it from the footer instead of a Not Linked page. The platform asking you needs one public URL that loads without a login.
Get a hosted privacy policy URLStep-by-step: paste your privacy policy URL
- Create a Not Linked page. In Pages, add a page under Not Linked and name it Privacy Policy. Paste your policy text. Not Linked keeps it out of the navigation while leaving it public.
- Link it from the footer. Edit the footer and add text or a link to the Privacy Policy page (Squarespace suggests the footer for policies and the imprint). The footer appears across the site.
- Link it from the cookie banner. Open the Cookies & Data Privacy panel, switch on Cookie banner, add the page link in the banner text field, choose the Decline all or Manage cookies buttons you want, and save.
- Add it to checkout if you sell. Stores can add a privacy policy to the checkout page from the store policies settings; it opens in a pop-up at checkout.
- Copy the URL and use it. Open the page in a private window, copy the address, and paste it into the lead form, store listing or app dashboard that asked. Keep the page where it is; edit the text rather than recreating it.
Field labels to look for
- Pages → Not Linked
- Where the policy page lives: public, but out of the navigation.
- Cookies & Data Privacy → Cookie banner
- The toggle and the text field where the policy link goes.
- Footer
- Squarespace's suggested place for policy links so they are reachable from almost any page.
Common reasons the form fails
- Turning on the cookie banner without a policy link in its text
- Leaving the policy as a draft or password-protected page
- Using the sample banner text as if it satisfied your legal requirements (Squarespace says not to assume that)
- Changing the page slug after it was used in an ad form
What Squarespace says about the text
Squarespace provides sample banner text but says you should not assume it satisfies your particular legal requirements, and that its article is a resource, not legal advice.
FAQ
Does Squarespace write a privacy policy for me?
No. Its help says it cannot advise on the content of a privacy or cookie policy page. Create a page with your own text or link a hosted policy.
Where do I link the policy on Squarespace?
From the footer (reachable from almost any page), from the cookie banner's text field, and on the checkout page if you have a store.
Do I need a cookie policy too?
Squarespace says a dedicated cookie policy is often a legal requirement if you have EU or UK visitors, and that it should explain visitors' GDPR rights.
Is a Not Linked page public?
Yes. Not Linked only keeps the page out of the navigation; the URL loads for anyone, which is what the platforms need.
